TWENTY-FIVE

Cecil’s mind kicked into overdrive to absorb as much as possible in the second he had before things went crazy. Each of the young couples carried a small machine pistol, probably MAC-10s, and had their sights set on he and Tricia. Eddie’s Glock was the first gun to speak, and it sent a round burning across the parking lot to punch through one of the newspaper machines at the curb. With that impact, Cecil’s world snapped back into full speed.

Without a word passing between them, the woman with the MAC-10 dropped to one knee behind the bank of newspaper machines while her partner hurried toward the front door of the restaurant. A few diners who’d been stepping outside quickly ducked back in. Someone across the street let out a surprised scream. Any sound after that was washed away by the chatter of automatic fire.

Cecil turned to Tricia and had to throw all of his weight behind his shoulder to push her toward the back corner of the building. She was almost completely dead weight since her first instinct had been to cover her head with both arms and hunker down into a defensive ball. When Cecil attempted to move her any farther, he stumbled and fell forward. It wasn’t a graceful maneuver, but it got them both out of the way of an incoming spray of .45-caliber rounds, which punched into the brick wall a few feet behind them.

Screaming as she hit the ground, Tricia rolled onto her side and started crawling toward the parking lot.

“No!” Cecil said as he reached under his jacket for the pistol holstered there. “Other direction! Get around the corner!”

Eddie shifted his aim toward the man who’d been shooting at Cecil and Tricia. The woman cut loose with a burst of three shots that punched into the side of Eddie’s Charger and shattered the window of an SUV parked beside him. Since he had his back against solid cover from the woman’s angle, Eddie leaned out and fired at the man.

“My car’s that way,” Tricia said. “We have to get out of here!”

“I agree,” Cecil replied as he got his feet beneath him. When he tried and failed one more time to push her toward the corner of the building, he pleaded, “We can’t go that way! Trust me!”

The man with the MAC-10 leaned around the front of the building and fired another burst at them. A few rounds skidded along the side of the restaurant and another hissed through the air several inches above their heads. After that, Tricia was much more open to Cecil’s suggestion.

Cecil helped her turn around and get moving toward the back end of the building. By the time they were out of the line of fire, the Smith & Wesson was in his hand. He poked his head around the corner to find the gunman walking straight at him. Eddie moved away from his car to duck behind another one that was closer to the entrance of the pancake house.
